Allied Health Certificate

The Umpqua Community College Healthcare Careers Pathway Certificate is a pathway consisting of six classes and 15 college credits and 1 to 3 high school credits (taking a combination of courses that may include Anatomy & Physiology, Health Sciences, Careers in Health, and Health Care Preparation). The courses are generally completed over a two-year period with Medical Terminology I, Medical Terminology II, and Anatomy taught over the course of one academic year. The three other courses, Introduction to Healthcare, Medical Office Procedures, and a Health Careers Preparation Seminar course are taught over the course of another academic year. Some students may take some or all of the coursework concurrently.

Course Descriptions

MED 115 (Anatomy and Physiology for Medical Assistants) includes basic concepts of anatomy and physiology, integrated disease-related information, clinical applications, and terminology. Students will gain an understanding of body structure and function and disease process as it relates to work in a clinic or doctor’s office. The course will cover recognition of systems and reporting criteria.

MED 111 (Medical Terminology I) is the first course in a two-term sequence designed for students going into the health sciences.  This course helps develop knowledge of medical terms for body systems.  This course focus on medical word elements, abbreviations, directional terms, body positions, levels of organization, biochemistry, microorganisms basic pharmacology, and the following body systems: integumentary, digestive/gastrointestinal, respiratory, and cardiovascular.

MED 112 (Medical Terminology 2) is the second course in a two-term sequence designed for students going into the health sciences.  This course helps develop knowledge of medical terms for body systems. elements, abbreviations, directional terms, body positions, levels of organization, biochemistry, microorganisms basic pharmacology, and the following body systems: endocrine, skeletal, muscular, urinary, reproductive, and nervous.

MED 100 (Introduction to Health Careers) is designed to give students an opportunity to research career path options and learn about a variety of careers in healthcare. Students will learn the educational requirements and physical and professional demands of the various careers through research and from the perspective of practicing professionals.

MED 220 (Medical Office Procedures) is designed as an introductory course in current medical office procedures.  Students are exposed to a variety of subjects pertaining to the role of a medical assistant, including both "front" and "back" office procedures.  Subjects to be covered include career opportunities in the medical assisting field, the medical office environment, medical ethics and laws, managed care, patient relations, and communications

CWE 161 (Health Careers Preparation Seminar) is intended to help students develop career preparation skills. This process will involve researching job markets, preparing resumes and cover letters, building an employment portfolio, and conducting an informational interview with an employer in a field of their choosing.
